The Stipulation of Specific Grave Sins that Must be Shunned
[20631] Imam Jaffer al Sadiq (pbuh) was asked by Ubayd B. Zurarah about the grave sins, in answer to which he replied: “There are listed in the book of Ali (pbuh), and are seven in number:
1. Disbelief in Allah.
2. Murdering an innocent soul
3. Disrespect to ones parents.
4. Devouring usury after knowledge of its prohibition.
5. Unjustly usurping the property of orphan
6. Fleeing from the midst of the battle.
7. Returning to a state of complacency and renegation (denial) after having believed.”
Ubayd then asked: "are these the greatest sins?” to which the Imam replied: “Yes,” then he asked: “Is usurping a dirham of an orphan’s property worse or abandoning prayer?” Imam replied: “Abandoning prayer.” Ubayd retorted: “but you did not count abandoning prayer as part of the grave sins in the list.” Imam asked: “what was the first thing that I mentioned?” he replied: “Disbelief.” So Imam said: “Therefore, the one who intentionally abandons the prayer is a disbeliever?”
