Millions of Followers of Imam Husain (A.S) In Karbala
In defiance of ISIL, millions of Shia mourners poured into Iraq’s Holy city of Karbala to take part in the world’s largest peaceful gathering – Arba’een.
Arbaeen marks the passing of 40 days after the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam – Imam Hussein Bin Ali – and 72 of his companions. Imam Hussein was killed at the hands of the tyrant of his time – Yazid Bin Mouaweya – in the unjust battle of Karbala back in 680 AD. Imam Hussein’s uprising against Yazid is seen by millions all over the world as a struggle of humanity against injustice.
In 2013 the number of pilgrims who took part in Arbaeen ceremony hit 20 million. This year the number of mourners is expected to break last year’s record. This year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage stands out from previous ones since it comes at the heels of ISIL’s advance in northern Iraq. Despite heightening security threats by the terror group millions of devotees flocked to Karbala to renew their allegiance to the ideals of Imam Hussein.
With aims of facilitating the arrival of Imam Hussein’s devotees, Iraqi Prime minister Haidar Al-Abadi has authorized the issuance of free visas for all. When asked the question who won the battle of Karbala – the son of Imam Hussein and fourth Shia Imam – Imam Zein Al-Abedeen replied: “When the Muslims Adhan is sounded – then you will know who was victorious” in assertion of his father’s going to battle to save Islam from corruption.
This mounting tide of black mourners which seems to be stretching wider and further every year is seen by many as yet another testimony to back the Imam’s remarks.
